Located south of Canberra in NSW, Snowy 2.0 is the next generation of the iconic Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. Once complete the scheme will provide 2000 MW of on-demand renewable power and ~350,000 MW hours of large-scale energy storage.

This project is at the forefront of international hydropower technology and design, attracting interest from global specialists across a range of fields. Snowy 2.0 also presents geographical and environmental challenges due to its remoteness and alpine location.

The scheme acts like a giant battery by absorbing, storing and dispatching energy. Two existing dams in Tantangara and Talbingo are linked through 27 km of tunnels and a new underground power station.

The project is designed to provide on-demand power while reusing or ‘recycling’ the water in a closed loop. Solar and wind energy is used to pump water to the higher dam to be stored for later use.
